Before and After Grande Dame carved vintage chair.

This lovely chair has so much character and a little bit of a back story.  She arrived at our store with a set of 4 other chairs.  The client swore this chair matched all the rest, but in reality, this chair did not match the other chairs.  It was  a bit older and had a different carving pattern on the back of the chair.
Of course the other chairs sold fairly quick, while this lone chair sat in waiting to be picked and loved.  A month went by and so she called out for some TLC. It was time for a retro revamp as we like to call upcycling.

We have spent hours with her, starting with cleaning her up with some mild soap and water and letting her dry and soak up the fresh sunny Florida air.  Although on some of the days it was a chilly 40-50 degrees.  Then began the retro revamp with light sanding to remove the thick polyurethane she was covered in.  Next up was three coats of primer [she was very dark wood].  The next step was choosing a lovely custom color of what we like to call cafe blanco.  It is a lovely white color with just the hint of a pale pink.  After hand painting her with three coats with waiting time in-between each coat, she really was calling out to us and her name became the Grande Dame chair.  Next came another custom color of what we like to call creamy white watered down for a whitewash effect on top of the other coats of cafe blanco. Then we realized the back should be just as fascinating as the carving on the front.  So the decision was made to add a custom pink color on the top of the back so if she is seen from across the room the back would be just as lovely.  The pink was a custom color we call carnival cotton candy and then after several coats we dry brushed another custom color called cartoon purple in several coats.  Then we used a dark washing of a greyish color for the shading.

After a day soaking up the Florida sun, it was time to distress her.  Hand distressing in all the right spots that would be affected over the years of being sat in around a big table with friends and family, or alone for a good book.  Spending hours with this chair was fun!  After distressing it was time for wipe down to get all sanding residue away. Then the final steps were crackling her and then sealing her with several coats of clear.

Funky Flea Market!

We have another Funky Flea Market coming up next month, and it will be our last one until the fall when it cools down a bit 🙂  I love these events because so many people come down and relax under their tents to show their artwork and sell their wares!  We have such a great time down here chatting with people from all over Florida and Georgia who travel over to share their creations with us.  At this event we allow people to sell almost anything, from handmade items to household decor and furniture, jewelry, clothing, books, dvds and more!
